What is AutoVital?
AutoVital is a vehicle issue tracker for iOS and iPadOS. It helps you log defects, damage, and wear on your vehicles so nothing gets forgotten before your next service or repair.
Is AutoVital free?
Yes — you can track one vehicle completely free. To add more vehicles, purchase garage expansion tiers from within the app. Tiers stack, so you only buy what you need.
Do I need to create an account?
No. AutoVital requires no account, no sign-up, and no login. All data stays on your device.
What devices does it support?
iPhone and iPad running iOS/iPadOS 18.0 or later.
Vehicles & VIN
How do I add a vehicle?
Tap the "+" button on the Vehicles tab. Enter a VIN to auto-fill details, or type the make, model, and year manually. You can add more details (colour, odometer, licence plate) at any time.
What is a VIN and where do I find it?
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character code for your vehicle. It's typically found on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb sticker, or your vehicle registration document.
The VIN decoder didn't fill in all fields — is that normal?
Yes. The decoder uses the NHTSA vPIC database, which covers most vehicles sold in North America. Some makes, models, or older vehicles may have incomplete records. You can always fill in missing fields manually.
Issues & Logging
How do I log an issue?
Tap "+" on the vehicle detail screen or the All Issues tab. The wizard guides you through selecting the location (e.g., Exterior → Front → Lights → Left headlight), then you add a description and optional photos.
What if I don't know where the issue is?
Tap "Not sure" at any level in the location wizard. You'll go straight to the description screen and can describe the problem in your own words.
How many photos can I attach?
Up to 5 photos per issue. Photos are automatically resized and compressed to save storage space.
Can I add more details to an issue later?
Yes. Open any issue to add comments, additional photos, or change its status at any time.
Exports
How do I share my issue list with a mechanic?
From a vehicle's issue list, tap the share button. Choose between a PDF report (formatted with vehicle details and descriptions) or a workshop list (grouped by vehicle area). Share via AirDrop, email, Messages, or any compatible app.
Vehicle Timeline & Events
What is the Vehicle Timeline?
New in version 1.1, the Timeline is a chronological feed of everything that happens to a vehicle — services, repairs, accidents, breakdowns and custom milestones — alongside its open issues. Tap a vehicle and you land on its Timeline.
What kinds of events can I log?
Five types: Service (provider, odometer, cost, line items), Maintenance (odometer, cost, items), Accident (severity, injury, third party, claim reference, location), Breakdown (cause, recovery provider, odometer), and Custom (free-form title for anything else — a detail, a wash, tyres rotated).
Can I link an issue to the event that fixed it?
Yes. Link one or more issues to an event, and vice versa, via the picker sheets. The full story stays connected so a workshop or new owner can see exactly which complaint each service addressed.
Is the Vehicle Timeline available now?
Yes. It ships in version 1.1, available now on the App Store. Update from the App Store to get the Timeline and event logging.
Data & Privacy
Where is my data stored?
All data is stored locally on your device. AutoVital does not upload your data to any server.
Will I lose my data if I delete the app?
Yes — since all data is stored locally, deleting the app removes your data. We recommend exporting important issue lists before removing the app.
Does AutoVital track me or collect analytics?
No. The app collects no user data. Optional anonymous crash reporting via Apple's MetricKit can be enabled in Settings — this uses Apple's own system and is not collected by us.
Purchases
How do vehicle slot tiers work?
You start with 1 free vehicle slot. Purchase additional tiers (+3, +5, or +10 slots) as needed. Tiers are non-consumable (one-time purchase) and stack — so buying +3 and +5 gives you 9 total slots (1 free + 3 + 5).
Can I restore my purchases on a new device?
Yes. Go to Settings in the app and tap "Restore Purchases." Your in-app purchases are tied to your Apple ID and can be restored on any device.
Troubleshooting
The app won't open / crashes on launch
- Ensure you're running iOS/iPadOS 18.0 or later.
- Try restarting your device.
- Delete and reinstall the app (note: this will remove local data).
VIN lookup isn't working
- Check your internet connection — VIN decoding requires a network connection to reach the NHTSA database.
- Verify the VIN is exactly 17 characters with no spaces.
- Some VINs (especially for vehicles not sold in North America) may not return results.
Photos aren't loading from camera
- Ensure you've granted camera permission when prompted. To check: go to iOS Settings → AutoVital → Camera.
- If using the photo library, ensure photo access is granted.
Can't find my exported PDF
- After exporting, check the Files app, your email outbox, or the app you shared to.
- If using AirDrop, ensure the receiving device has AirDrop enabled.
